WHY Control Pests at Home?

Home Pest Control
Living in Australia means you are fortunate to be in one of the most wonderful countries in the world.

We mostly live a safe, convenient and happy life with lots of opportunity that so many others in the world do not get.

One of the downsides, and ok, each person may see more or less than others is our homes will be affected by pasts, in one form or another. It's just a fact of Australian life. It's not only us humans who love living here....so does a whole range of not so nice creepy crawlies.

Fortunately, in most cases they present no real life threatening danger to us. However, they are often very annoying and can cause emotional discomfort, especially to our children. Most kids and many adults react adversely to the sight of large spiders crawling up our bedroom wall, or a cockroach scurrying across the floor so it is wise to do whatever you can to reduce and control pests.

The good news is there are a number of simple, yet practical things anyone can do to help reduce pest infestations and minimise the negative impact they may have on your home life, kids and pets.

Here are a few things you could do this weekend, that won't break the bank and won't take a huge chunk out of your weekend leisure. Will they completely solve the problem and rid your home entirely of pests? Probably not, but they will certainly go a long way towards helping minimise pest problems.
  • This may be a tough one to get through to your kids, especially of you have teenage boys but will have immediate positive effects. Clear up after you have had something to eat. Don't leave dirty dished in the sink, and food scraps or dirty plates on the table. Take a few minutes, and it really is only a few minutes to wash dirty dishes, wipe down surfaces and clear up. Ants love your leftovers, so make life tough for them by not leaving any!
  • Use your rubbish bin as much a possible. Make sure you put all leftovers into suitable rubbish bags and tie them up tightly before throwing in the bin.
  • And then, empty your own rubbish bins into your main bin collection area as often as possible. I know I struggled getting my son to take the rubbish out, having to first bribe then threaten him....so it's easier said than done, but will help your pest control efforts and remove many different kinds of infestations.

  • Cockroaches love hiding out and multiplying in the dark, dirty recesses of your home. Behind kitchen equipment like your fridge, cooker or microwave and also in cupboard and drawers. Regularly moving these kitchen appliances and cleaning behind them and wiping out cupboards will remove a lot of the appeal for cockroaches to hide and breed there. Do this on a regular basis and you will definitely notice a reduced number of cockroaches.
  • And while you are cleaning cupboards, make sure you have all food sources in sealable containers with good, tight lids. No matter how hard you try, just sealing bags of goodies with knots or elastic or whatever your preferred method is, will never be good enough to tempt pests.
  • Check the outside of your home regularly too. Has anyone dropped food, or spilt a drink? Was the BBQ cleaned up after it was last used. Not only is the fat dripping from meat cooked very appealing to rats and mice, but so is any left over food, like bits of onion, not properly cleared away.  We all love a barbecue, but it is a hugely attractive source of food for ant and rats, so take a few moments after you have dined and clean it up.
